Running for the Hills: Viola Valley Half Marathon

When I was working on my 2014 race schedule, I knew I wanted to run the Viola Valley Half Marathon. It's in a smallest town in Tennessee, and it's only 20 minutes from my house. My grandparents are from there & we have family reunions there every December at the Community Center. The race route is very hilly, rural, & goes through three counties in Tennessee. It was the 3rd Annual but my 1st time running. This was also my first race to get to run with my running buddy Demetria. We have been running together for almost a year now, but we've only been able to match up for one 5K last summer. She ran Viola last year, so she was able to mentally prep me for some of it.

Leading up to the race, I didn't feel prepared. I hadn't had a "good" long run weekend since my last half in March. I wasn't doing my hill repeats once a week, and the last time I did them, I only made it up the hill 3 times instead of 6. My mileage was lower for April, but I was doing more Yoga. I had mentally prepared myself to not beat my PR from March (1:58) and probably not break 2hrs, just hadn't spoken it out loud. When I started running, I didn't quit. Even with all the hills, probably 2 per mile, I ran my most even paced run ever. Coming in with a new PR of 1:56! I guess I was more prepared than I thought. Running conditions really helped. The weather was in the low 50s  (way below average for May in TN), overcast with a breeze). It did threaten to rain a couple times at mile 5 & 8, but nothing more than a mist. Charlie said the radar looked really ugly a couple times, as he sat inside eating his breakfast on the square with Demetria's husband.

Here's a few shots from the race:

And we are off!

After with our medals!

Runners Tell All: Share a Running Picture

I've been follow reading all the Runners Tell All posts this year, so this linkup is way overdue.  My last post on the blog was a highlight reel from most of my previous runs this past year, but they were mostly good pics.  This past weekend, I ran my 3rd half marathon.  After the race I was going through all the pictures taken by my husband and race photographer, and I came to a conclusion... I have Crazy Running Face.

5/17/14: Viola Valley Half Marathon

At this point, I wasn't worried about my face, I was worried about my PR!  I beat my best time by 2 minutes on a super hilly course.

Just Run

I have a new hobby that sort of involves shopping & clothes. It's RUNNING! I'm addicted. I ran a 5K a couple years ago and nearly died.  I did most of my training on an elliptical and boy was it different running on the road vs a machine.  The machine will push you, but without the machine I was left to push myself & my mind didn't like it very much....

After the bombings at the Boston Marathon, something changed me, and I wanted to give running a second chance.  I started out using the C25K app, but I just wasn't getting the hang of it.  The next month, I got a call from Tara about a 5K night race (that was only 1 week away)!  We signed up, both very underprepared, but we completed it anyways.  There was a lot of walking, but we finished (and didn't die!)  This time I didn't stop.  I kept running.  I started running with distance runners.  I remember my first long run.  It was a Saturday morning in July. I got up at 6am and we ran 8 miles.  It was amazing.

Since then I've logged 822 miles on my Nike app, ran 4 5Ks, 1 10K, 2 Half Marathons

6/14/13: Sundrop Sizzler 5K

7/26/13:  Downtown After Dark 5K

10/20/13: Running for the Bay Half Marathon

10/20/13: Running for the Bay Half Marathon / My Mom walked the 5K

11/30/13:  Running of the Turkey's 10K

3/16/14:  Germantown Half Marathon

3/22/14: Rush for the Gold 5K (won my age group)

5/3/14: Generations 5K Color Run

My husband works for the city & he personally made me a motivational "high five" sign for one of my routes
